Dragon Fruit

June 8, 2012 | Filed Under Dragon Fruit, Fruits

The other day at the supermarket, I came across this fruit with an enticing name.  I’d never seen or tasted it before.

I was tempted to buy one to see what it tastes like.

However after my past experience with the guavas, in the same store,

I decided to pass on the opportunity.

Has anyone tasted a dragon fruit before?  How does it taste?

  1. They don’t taste bad but are a bit bland, in my opinion. I love guava, though…

    Cheers,

  2. Sorry, I have no experience with this fruit.

  3. I agree with Rosa, it is a bit bland, but the seeds inside kinda reminded me of kiwi, just a bit bland.

  4. Paz, I’ve never had dragon fruit but its quirky appearance always catches my eye when I see it at the market! :)

  5. What everyone says is correct. It is rather bland, the insides are similar to kiwi but white & there are other colors besides the pink.

I have been growing red dragonfruit for years now. It is a form of cactus, often cultivated in asian countries. Fruit is preceeded by night opening large white flowers, which rapidly form green fruit, turning to red when ripe. Taste is quite subtle and is very juicy. I have made jam from the fruit – mixed with either apple or rosellas as they don’t appear to have any pectin. Generally I serve as part of a fruit platter – added just before serving as the juice seeps into the things it touches. Also serve it with either yoghurt or custard. I think it would go well with rosewater flavour or in a rose petal jam too. Whatever you serve it with, flavour needs to be subtle to compliment the mild dragonfruit flavour..otherwise just use it for the visual impact. Fresh fruit impacts on colour in digestion, like beetroot, so don’t get frightened when you see red in the toilet bowl!

I have been eating dragon fruit for over 10 years now. I first had it when i was in Nicaragua. There are some new farms popping up here in socal too. I buy dried dragonfruit from this company http://pitayaplus.com/ they are based in socal. They have an awesome social mission too!

  12. I tried this the other day. I can’t really describe its taste, but it somewhat sweet and not bad at all. It has the appearance and texture of a kiwi fruit. It’s a very lovely, vibrant fruit.

  13. Hi Nicole: Welcome! Thanks for the description!
