New York Monday #146: Le Pain Quotidien

Beligium Hot Chocolate — the messy looking one was made by yours truly.

Last weekend, Elizabeth of About New York and (The House in Marrakesh) and I had planned on meeting and going to Central Park to take photos.  However, it was extremely cold and neither of us felt like wandering around in the chilly weather.  Instead, we decided to do the next best thing — find a nice warm place to sit, eat and talk.  We found the place at Le Pain Quotidien — a comfortable bakery/eatery with long communal tables.  There are several locations in the city.  We went to the one in the Gramercy/Flatiron area.

They have an extensive menu of different foods.  We talked over Belgium Hot Chocolate and a basket of different delicious rustic European breads.  The waiter brought us cups of hot milk with the melted chocolate on the side and we poured the chocolate into the milk.  I made the crazy design you see in the above photo.  The breads were served with different jams (apricot and raspberry) and a hazelnut-praline spread.  Very nice!

Afterwards, we went next door to browse in ABC Carpet & Home.  It’s a huge store filled with everything from chandeliers, candles, books, carpets, furniture, jewelry and more.

If you’re in the neighborhood, you may want to check both places out.

Cheers and have a great week,

    Rosa

  4. Hi Paz! Good to have you back! And what a lovely way to spend time with a friend!

  5. Sounds like a wonderful afternoon to me. Don’t you just love ABC — I remember visiting there years ago. I think you could spend years in there walking around and discovering something you didn’t notice on your last walk through. So much to see and so beautifully presented.

  6. I like the idea of serving the melted chocolate on the side.

  7. Ohh, messy or not it looks soooo good! I love hot chocolate!

  8. What an amazing hot cocoa experience – I love the idea of being able to temper the chocolatiness yourself. And god knows, there’s not much better than a side of hazelnut-praline spread!

    Great photos, too.

  9. Paz, sounds like a great afternoon you had. The only word I can think of for the photos is cozy. I wish it were cold here. Oh, that’s right, I’m in the wrong corner of the world to expect cold weather.

  10. ABC is one of my favorite fantasy stores — fantasy because most everything there is out of my price range, but it’s fun to look and dream!

  11. Hi everyone! Thanks for your warm welcome. Yes, hanging out and having hot chocolate sure was fun. And yes the ABC store was pricey but we did find some little knick knacks that were reasonably priced.

  12. I have never had that sort of hot chocolate. Now that I’m not allergic to milk anymore (woohoo) I have been making Green & Black’s hot chocolate with home-whipped cream. Yum.

But those photos? You make me want even more. Yum, Yum!

Love the photos of NYC, any photos including the cool store. We just got back from DC, and I reveled in the city stuff, especially tea houses with more kinds of tea than coffee (not found anywhere I’ve been in the midwest, except for Chicago). I took so many photos of tall buildings!

And I took a photo of a fire escape just for you. Once I get my 200+ photos in order I’ll make sure you see it.

    HI Rosa: Thanks!

Hi Cris: Thank you, thank you!

Hi Janice: You’re so right. I think that if I went back, I’d see stuff I hadn’t seen the last time I was there. ;-)

Hi Simona: I like that idea, too!

Hi Ana: I love hot chocolate, too. Especially on a very cold day.

Hi Sweet Freak: Welcome! It was very cool!

Hi Mari: It WAS cozy and nice. Come on down!

Hi Lynn H: Your hot chocolate sounds divine. I can’t wait to see your photos!

Wouldn’t it be lovely to meet up at a LPQ (either here or there!) one day? And then go to ABC of course!!
