New York Monday #125: Russian Tea Room

June 1, 2008 | Filed Under New York Monday

Passing by the Russian Tea Room in the early weekday morning.

Most likely these pedestrians are headed to work.

Has anyone been to the Russian Tea Room?  It’s on 57th Street, a few buildings away from Carnegie Hall.  Founded in 1927, it was originally a hangout for Russian expatriates, then for those in the entertainment industry.  Today, just about anyone goes there.

Happy Monday, all!

Paz

The window contains these lovely dolls, the menu and other restaurant-related paraphernalia.

Interesting-looking detailed door.

A close up of the door.  Is this a rabbit or hare?  What do you think?

Another closeup of the door.  This looks like a dog to me.  Yes?  No?

Scratch that.  Kathleen tells me, in the comments section,  that it is an ancient deer design.

  2. sounds like a fancy place :)

I thought it was closed down! Guess someone rescued it. My sister and I love Russian art and have a combined collection of more than fifty of those dolls called matryoshka or, “little mothers,” that we treasure. Some of them have folk designs and some are painted by artists in traditional “high art” designs. They’re so beautiful. Guess I’ll have to do something to take myself to the Russian Tea Room! I think that dog is an ancient deer design. I used to read a lot about Russian designs.

I thought my message wasn’t going through! Sorry for the duplicate.

  7. Hi Lydia: How cool!

Hi Kat: It’s an interesting place to experience.

    Hi Rosa: Yes, interesting. ;-)

Hi Kathleen: I find it fascinating that you have over 50 of the dolls. Yes, I think you should try to make it out the restaurant. Thanks for clearing up the animal design.

    Thanks for stopping by, all!

I just returned from a visit to New York and last week I tried the Express Lunch. It was really really good. I highly recommend it. The food was excellent and the cocktails were great.

I have pics of the restaurant and food here.
