New York Monday #90: Walking on Broadway

October 1, 2007 | Filed Under New York Monday

I walked slowly on a very long block on Broadway.  Not as hot as last weekend, the sun shone brightly and it was still warm enough to make me continue to wonder whether the fall season had truly arrived or we were still in the summer season.

A good-looking couple walked past me in a quick, confident stride.  Dressed nicely and walking fast, they looked as if they were going to an important function.  Actually, they looked and walked like fashion models gliding down a runway, except that in this case, the Broadway sidewalk served as their stage.

I probably wouldn’t have given them any more thought, except that the woman’s shoes caught my attention.  She wore golden high heeled shoes.  Really high heels — at least five to six inch heels.   The woman amazed me with the speed with which she walked in her heels.  Although she walked confidently with her man, I could see that she took measured steps and tried to keep up with him.  The man kept his arm around her waist and she kept up with him without a problem.  She flashed by in her glamourous golden heels as I trudged along in my very comfortable red crocs.  I could barely keep up with them. LOL!

I just kept thinking that if I wore those heels, I wouldn’t make it past half the block.  I wouldn’t make it after ten steps.

"Call a cab, now.  I’m not taking another step," is what I’d say if I were in those high heeled shoes.

Have a good week, everyone, and whatever type of shoes you wear, stay comfortable.

Paz

I would not be able to stand still with those shoes, let alone walk: I’d destroy my ankles in less than no time if I tried to move. My mother, on the other hand, cannot walk unless she wears high heels. For a while I tried hard to learn to walk like her, then I gave up and I am happy with my comfortable flat sport shoes that allow me to walk as fast as I wish. Nice vignette.

I once went shoe shopping with a guy from work. We were going to a formal dinner together. I kept reaching for the lower heels, and he kept reaching for the very high, sexy heels. When I tried on his suggestions, he whistled. I complained that they hurt my feet. To which he replied, “If it doesn’t hurt, it’s not sexy.”

I would have fallen down several times and not looked very graceful if I were in those heels.

I don’t think I’d make it out of the house in heels like that! I haven’t worn heels in years. I’d surely fall off!

Paz, in our Indian movies, the women dance with these stilettos on - and I’m not talking about slow dances - giddy-paced ones on different kinds of terrain - do watch one if you can, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Great post — kind of nostalgic. I, too, remember days when I wore shoes like that–at trade shows!!! So do my feet and they remind me often.

I agree, the second photo looks really good. Really nice candid shot.
I am, unfortunately, a culprit for wearing high heels! Most of my work court shoes are 3″! But i have a pair of flip flops in my desk drawer for when i wear the new ones and they hurt my feet. Noone can see them under my desk. But then, each time i have to get up, i have to remember i have the flat ones or it would be embarrasing (we’re not allowed to wear flip flops at work!):)

  20. Paz on October 7th, 2007 7:50 pm

Hi Mae: If you can wear those heels, I say more power to ya, babes! What a smart idea to keep your flats and wear them under your desk.
