New York Monday #79: Summer Food Shopping

July 8, 2007 | Filed Under New York Monday

The fruits and vegetables look so enticing as they’re arranged no nicely in front of the super market.  Even if you did not intend to do any food shopping, you’re sorely tempted to stop and by something from the food display outside.  For the past month, I’ve been buying cherries, everyday.  What’s your favorite food item to buy during the summer.

Have a great week!

Seems like I’m easily swayed. I love blueberries but if another looks sweeter and prettier, I’ll fall.

Right now I’m in love with bell peppers. I like orange the best, and they dry out so fast you need to get them right off the plant, almost. I’ll compromise with red or yellow when I can’t find a fresh orange one.

I love kohlrabi when it’s in season, and any kind of greens but especially swiss chard and spinach. I have a tiny garden, about 2 x 3 feet, and have one swiss chard plant, some parsley, dill and cilantro that I can use as I am inspired. I also have one large pot on the back steps with one bush tomato, which will produce in a few weeks. It’s not a lot, but it’s enough for a family of two when we don’t cook at home every day.

I love your photos, Paz. You have such a good eye!
I love ALL summer veggies and fruits and would be hard-pressed to choose just one as a favorite. Corn, tomatoes, peaches and blueberries are at the top of my list.

I’ve been buying cherries too, but also lots of okra! Looking forward to buying lots of veggies in the upcoming summer months!

I know they’re not local (to New England, anyway), but my favorite thing to buy is seedless grapes, which I eat on the way home from the market!

Food markets are my favourite places to gawk at, I even seek them out on vacation!

These outdoor stands in front of shops were very common in Edinburgh, but not here in Estonia. Luckily we’ve got few outdoor markets, so things aren’t too bad after all:)

I love the summer just because of all of the fresh fruit and veggies!! My favorite meal growing up was always a garden meal - sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, squash, and my mom’s chile rellenos - all from the garden. Yummm - I’m craving it right now!

This is funny: I just wrote a post about watermelon and that is the first thing I see when I visit your blog. This year I seem to have a penchant for red bell peppers: I roast one and immediately find a way to use it. I went to a farmers’ market on Sunday with my friend who lives in NJ and she had difficulty deciding what not to buy. I got also fresh eggs.

Right now for me it’s cherries and plums. Later on it will be tomatoes! Ah, can’t wait. Love your photos of the market; fruits and vegetables always look so much better to me when they’re displayed outside the store.

It’s got to be tomatoes - I’m just waiting till they’re all ripe and I’ll eat them every day.

I’d have to say tomatoes. We get good ones year-round here in California, but they do taste different in the summer months. Better, that is. And I just think there’s nothing like a great-tasting tomato. Nothing.

Don’t you love summer!! I can’t resist the cherries either. Or, the tomatoes. What about the melons? Gotta have some, Oh, and blueberries for blueberry dumplings — yum. It’s just paradise, isn’t it?
